How do I operate my pool??

I bought a house with a in-ground salt water pool. I retained a pool service for a few months and the pool guy labled the pool pump and piping with tape he had written on. I noticed that for the $ I was paying the guy was here for about 5 minutes once a week. My wife and I decided to cancel the pool service.

Go figure, I went back to the pool pump to clean the filter and noticed the tape with the writing had been removed...or at least I think so. I wouldn't mind finding the pool guy alone to show him how pissed off I am at him. I think he snuck in and did something to my pool but I can't prove it.

Anyhow...back on track.....

My pool pump area has several valves that I can't figure out how to adjust. The way they are now the spa jets push water and the spa nicely overflows into the pool BUT the main pool jets do not blow at all nor does the skimmer suck in any water. When I adjust a valve at the pump that gets the main pool jets to move the pool water the spa empties out! How do I get them to both work at the same time like they used to?

I also bought one of those sucking creepy crawler gadgets to go around the bottom of the pool to clean it. Once my pool guy stopped coming it conviniently stopped working also. Go figure. It plugs into the skimmer but since there is no suction in the skimmer the crawler isn't crawling. What do I do?

Any help would be really appreciated! I may kill that pool guy if I see him!

A picture of your filter set-up would help us considerably! (there are just too many possibilities on valve configurations to cover all of them )

Yeah, without pictures it's tough.
If you can read the brand and model number of the pump, and the filter, that's a start. Also the brand and model of the salt water chlorinator.
Also if you know the volume of the pool, that will help too.

Count how many drains you have: Skimmers and drains and whether in the pool or spa.
Same for returns (where the water goes back into the pool).
