    It is odd. What is the diameter of the smaller pipe? Most pool plumbing is done with 1.5" PVC. I'll let the plumbers here look at it.

    I've used internal couplings in the past, and on steam lines even... with pool water flow and pressure, should not cause extra vibration or such, just a slight reduction in water flow and maybe a slight increase in backpressure. If flow and pressure is good, shouldn't hurt anything in the long run!
