It is odd. What is the diameter of the smaller pipe? Most pool plumbing is done with 1.5" PVC. I'll let the plumbers here look at it.

I had a new pump installed. To minimize plumbing work, the PB inserted a small piece of straight pipe inside the existing straight pipe a little ways down the line from the output side of the pump. This was done in two spots in the line that runs out from the pump to the filter (ie a smaller diameter straight pipe was used as a coupling/union - inside the existing straight pipe in two spots). This resulted in the pipe diameter being reduced, than going back to "normal" than reduced again (using that straight pipe inside strain pipe), than back to normal, all in a fairly close proximity in that line between the pump and the filter.
Just want to know if this is SOP and if not, does it present any problem (ie, increase in vibration in the line or some other pressure related issue)? It just seemed odd.

I've used internal couplings in the past, and on steam lines even... with pool water flow and pressure, should not cause extra vibration or such, just a slight reduction in water flow and maybe a slight increase in backpressure. If flow and pressure is good, shouldn't hurt anything in the long run!
