You can also use a straight section of the right diameter auto radiator hose as a coupling. Any good auto store should stock straight sections in various diameters so take a piece of the 1.5" PVC with you and find something to fit. Cut the pipe, leave a 4-5" gap between the ends so you can slip the hose on, then tighten it with hose clamps. If you get about a 1" bite on the PVC it will hold nicely. This also allows flexing and helps in reducing noise. Get the cheapest hose you can. Some are designed for really rugged applications and you don't need that and the much higher cost. I've had 3 joints in place for probably 8 years and the hoses are holding up fine.
