Default Vacuum for large concrete pool

I have a large 42x22 concrete pool. Approx. 40,000 gal. For years I have been using just a hose, pole and vacuum head (from walmart) to vacuum my pool. This year, for some reason, the pump won't pull enough water to keep the pump primed when I try to close off the other skimmer and bottom drain (like I've done for last 15 years). I must have a air leak, pump problem or some other problem. Otherwise the pool is running fine.

Pool is square with 90 degree angles. It has a bottom drain and two skimmers. I have four returns.

So, I'm looking for a self-contained vacuum of some kind to keep the pool clean. I don't mind having to work a little with a pole and vacuum on the end just so it's a self-contained unit. I do not want to install an exterior pump (polaris style). Since I have a suction problem now, I don't believe I can use my pool pump to clean. My price range is $500 and under.

    Any suggestions?

    thanks, jed

I think you can likely get your pump fixed for under $500, but a self-contained vacuum system with an independent pump typically goes for more than $1,000. You can find them at online commercial dealers like this, http://www.brockent.com/CategoryView.asp?CategoryId=301 .

You might could make your own for $500 . . . but again, if you could do that, fixing your pump would probably be easier and cheaper.

I don't know how much stuff you have to vacuum, but have you looked into the Poolbuster vacuums? They're a lot like Dust Busters that fit on the end of your telescoping pole....
