Hi everyone! I'm a new home owner w/ inground 16 x 32 vinyl pool. We purchased our home end of November and the home had previously been on the market for several months. Fortunately a pool company maintained the pool while it was on the market and the home was vacant. When we moved in the pool was in great "looking" order. However the pump was not working correctly and we were not getting suction from the skimmer and the chlorine levels became really low. We went to our local pool store and had the water tested about 3 weeks ago and we were told to add 2lbs of shock to get chlorine levels up since our tabs in the skimmer were not dissolving due to the no suction issue. We added the "powder shock" directly into the pool. In the mean time we were working on getting the clog out of the pipe that lead from the skimmer to the pump-- we were successful!! It was full of acorns and leaves and we got it all out!!! Around 2 hours after we added the shock we watched our beautiful crystal clear pool turn a NASTY green color. The next morning it was HORRIBLE!! Since it was a sunday and we didn't have a test kit we just ran the pump. Monday morning I took another water sample up to the pool store and they told me that my water levels were perfect and that I should just continue to run my filter (sand) 24/7 and it should clear up in a few days. Well a few days later it was still the same. So I decided to take another water sample to another pool store to get a second opinion and was told to add the shock that you mix with water (4lbs) directly into skimmer as well as a full bottle of yellow algae stuff and see what it looked like in the morning. If the water was still nasty green to add the remaining 4lbs of shock. At this point my pool had started to develop this brown dust on the bottom when swept. The guy also suggested that I vacuum the pool and waste the water to get the brown stuff off the bottom. I did! Added more shock the next afternoon because the water was still yucky green. Continued to vacuum and waste the entire weekend. Well I've had to add about 6 inches of water to my pool from all the backwashes and wasting we've done and I'm still dealing with a green pool. So I go back to them and they say I have phosphates in my water to add 1/2 bottle of Phosfree so I did (two days ago) and it's still green and now it's even more hazy than before. I have two different readings for my levels one from today and one from the day before. I'm seriously at a loss and all I know to do after reading your forum is to just add bleach??? I have also read that I might have mustard algae b/c I have the sand looking stuff on the bottom of the pool as well... I dunno! Need help PLEASE!!!
