My skimmer is connected to the flexible PVC pipe with a rubber adapter with two clamps. So that would be one option to install a valve.
However, in over 25+ years of AG pool ownership, I have never had a valve on the suction side of the pump that feeds out of the skimmer.
I do suggest that you take some precaution to keep the PVC out of the sun.

You might do well to invest in 2 Hayward SP 722 valve with a male adapter thread and a female adapter end (I'm going from memory on the part #) These will thread into the bottom of the skimmer and the return fitting and allow you to reuse the existing fittings to connect the hoses
If you want to 'hard plumb' a couple of 2 way valves into the system, we can certainly help you with PVC plumbing methods and techniques
