If the timer is digital it will need to be set to the amount of time you want it on.
If the timer is mechanical you will need the on trip tab and the off trip tab installed for the timer to work. Hope this helps
I have recently installed a timer on our inground pool. What setting should I set it at? 12 hrs on, 12 off or what?

Mcnown, welcome to the forum. How long you run the pump and when depends on many factors. ex: If you have solar heat you want it to run during peak sun times. Otherwise you want to run at least a few hours a day to circulate and mix water and perform proper filtering and cleaning. Another factor is the flow rate and how often you theoretically exchange the water. More flow = less run time. Post some specifics on the pool type and water volume, pump and filter types, sanitization method, and any other features you may have like an attached spa, waterfall etc.

A lot of factors to consider here. We run ours 12 hours per day at night. The pump runs on low speed while the SWG does the chlorination. SWG is set at 40% for a 26000 gallon pool.
