Default grate/cover for the bottom of the pool

    All,

I have learned a lot from everyone at this site. I have a couple of quick questions and the answers might help me solve the problems with my pool vacuum.

First, what is the grate at the bottom of the pool called? Is it a return grate? Is the purpose to have a second point of suction in the pool?

Second, I have seen different covers? Why would someone need these? How do you replace them? Would the grate be the reason that my pool vacuum sticks at the bottom every time it passes by?

    Thanks,
    Guy

The grate covers what is typically called the "Main Drain" in the pool. Your pump pulls from this and from the skimmer(s). Some pools now have two main drains to prevent a kid from getting sucked in if they block one while playing around. There are special covers that can go over it to prevent pool cleaners from getting stuck.
