Super Pump Appearance

I purchased a super pump- 2 speed pump and was wondering if anybody elses looks like mine. It doesn't exactly look like the pictures I've seen. The front part of the pump where the water goes into the pump looks like all of the pics I've seen, but the motor is not gold it's black -and there is a black box that sits on the very top of the motor. The motor works ok, but I was wondering why it doesn't look like ANY picture that I've seen of that pump. Also, all of the model numbers match up for that particular pump. :confused:

I've only seen one SPII, and the motor is black. The SP is gold, but I think the II is black.

If you go to haywardnet.com, the company's web site, you can see it. The SP 2 speed can be as small as 1hp, but the smallest SPII 2spd is 1.5.

The SP has a gold motor. The SPII is all black, streamlined (a la the 30's) with a gold label on the motor.

IF the HP is right for you, I don't see an issue (unless they charged you more). If it's too much, you'll need to have them replace it.

Both should be full-rated pumps, so the hp can be compared.

This is a super pump 1 hp, not a super pump II. I'll try to upload some pics to show what it looks like. I just don't know why it looks different than ALL of the pictures I've seen.

The pump seems to run ok. Just looks different. I talked to Hayward and they said the pump hasn't changed in years. ?? Denise

I can only see the first picture--the other two don't load. It looks like a replacement motor--certainly not the original. Is this a used pump?

This is suppose to be a new pump. I'll try to reload the pics.

You can see on some of the pics that the paint has chipped off. It came that way to me. Denise

The pump and basket look like a Superpump, but the motor sure doesn't. It looks like a replacement motor, especially with the "Smith" logo on it.

Check out the online dealers and see what they charge for 2spd Superpump. Check again with Hayward. Maybe their newest have different motors? Mine looks like their website picture and I got in 2002.

If it turns out this motor is more efficient than other Superpumps, you may be better off.. I don't know.

I called Hayward back and this time the gentleman told me that sometimes they will substitute a black motor for a gold one. He also said that the black box on top-capacitor-usually isn't shown on pictures. I don't understand that. I know the pic I've seen of CarlD's pump, I don't see the capacitor. Maybe they moved it to the top. He didn't have an answer for me if they moved it up there or not. At least it works and I'm using less electricity. Denise

Does anyone know if you can purchase the 2 speed motor, and attach it to the pump from a regular super pump?

I've got a replacement motor for a Superpump on the way and it's black and it's an A. O. Smith motor. The price for the motor (2hp) was 209.99.

I'm not familiar witht he superpump in particular, but generally the housing is the same for multiple motor configurations. Normally, the impeller must be changed to match the motor HP, but the housing is the same.

This is a factory pump, not a used one.

Smith, as in A.O. Smith is a major supplier of motors.
The part number on the lable, SP2607Z2 is a Hayward specific part number for a 1 hp, 2 speed pump. I can't imagine that someone would create a specific label for replacement motors that are used for multiple applications. What I mean is, the label verifies that it is a factory direct motor for your pump, and not a replacement/used pump.

The capacitor you see is common on some models and is an energy device. The start/run capacitor allows a higher torque for the motor to start, with less power draw.
It's really a minor thing, but none the less, I wouldn't worry that it doesn't look like other pumps.

You can make your own two speed pump by replacing a single speed motor with a two speed motor onto the wet end of a pump. As mentioned, make sure it's the same rated horsepower on high speed as what you currently have.
If you're looking to replace the impeller to a higher hp impeller, you can do so safely by not exceeding a 1/2 hp difference. Keep in mind also that if you change the impeller, you may have to change the diffuser too.
Its best to just keep the same hp impeller.
(The cost difference of a one speed and a two speed pump is all in the motor, so expect to pay more for a replacment two speed motor)

I think that black portion sticking out is where the capacitor resides ... (capacitor start/ cap start sometimes called in product descriptions).
In the event that your motor appears dysfunctional .. sometimes if you get that whirring sound as if the motor won't 'kick in' to turn over .. others have suggested to replace the capacitor (~$8-$10) and all is good!
