How to put the bleach in?

I am new to the pool fourm. I would like to start using bleach instead of shock in my pool. I am not sure how to add it to my pool. I added the shock through the skimmer. I have a automatic chlorinator that I am going to continue using. Please give me some tips on how to add the bleach.

If you have an inline chlorinator it's safest to add bleach in a return stream or to distribute it around the pool in small amounts.

Pouring bleach into a skimmer when you have an inline chlorinator that you're using or have used recently may cause the chlorinator to explode when the relatively undiluted bleach reaches the tri-chlor in the chlorinator.

Can you pour into a skimmer if you don't have a clorinator? Is it safe for a vinyl liner?

I have a vinyl lined pool. I also add my bleach to the skimmer, in fact I add all the chemicals EXCEPT for muriatic acid to the skimmer.

If you have an automatic chlorinator with no tabs in it is it OK to add the Bleach directly into the skimmer?

Sure, no problem...just add to the skimmer.

I believe that I read somewhere on this board that you should never pour bleach through your skimmer if you have an auto-chlorinator that has been used with pucks.

I usually pour it in the pool in front of the return jet.

You should never pour bleach through the skimmer with a auto chlorinator in line. The result could be very dangerious. I just pour slowly in front of the return jet. Pour slow enough that you dont have slugs forming or get splashed on (i have runied shirts by splash).

I hereby nominate "hulla"'s post, the third in this thread, for the funniest one liner of the month.

Slug -- large amount of chem added that may hit liner of the pool. ie "a slug of acid"

Thanks for all those replies. I think I am going to try it. I still a little nervous. How does the bleach compare to shock? Does 1 galloon of bleach the same a 1lb of shock? or does it compare differently? Thanks again to all who responded. This is all new to me.

I am sure there is a comparison rate but it is better to use bleachcalc written by one the pros here.

I would reconmend getting a good test kit like the one Ben sells here or better yet buy one of Bens kits.:D
