Re: just got good test kit. HELP PLEASE
Back in business. Ordered new regeants got them in one day. Go Amatto!!
Anyways tested FF at 4pm 20ppm. Big rain storm came through. FF dropped to 15ppm.What the? Istill want to let it drop to 10 like you said. Im afraid to. I still think its dropping overnight yet, but not much. Also my TA dropped from 200 to 175 so far. Should I really do it Mr. Ringer. Thanks

Re: just got good test kit. HELP PLEASE
If you're losing chlorine overnight, then sustain the shock level. If you're not, then let it drift down.
-
Re: just got good test kit. HELP PLEASE
Aylad, we're not sure why he's losing. But he's already sustained high chlorine for 3 - 4 days with not change, but high water quality.. So I recommended dropping to to operational level, to see how it will run.
"Should I really do it, Mr. Ringer"
I'm not sure what you mean.

Re: just got good test kit. HELP PLEASE
Im baffeled.
Test last night
FF 28
CC .5ish
This mourning
FF25
CC0ish
Helppppppppppp.

Re: just got good test kit. HELP PLEASE
Sounds to me like you're winning. You consumed free chlorine last night getting rid of your residual combined chlorine.
You report 0ish for CC, did the sample show pink when you added the R-0003?
-
Re: just got good test kit. HELP PLEASE
a hint of pink. i think half a drop would get rid of it im using 5ml test
-
Re: just got good test kit. HELP PLEASE
Shub, I really think you need to let your chlorine drop, and see what happens.
-
Re: just got good test kit. HELP PLEASE
sounds like a plan. starting now. just in time for 100 degree temps next to days to uck the chorine out. thanks
-
Re: just got good test kit. HELP PLEASE
Just had an idea. What if myCYA is lower than what i think. Would that explain the extra loss of chorine since my shock levels should be lower
-
Re: just got good test kit. HELP PLEASE
If you tested it correctly with the Taylor K2006, it's not lower than you think.
We don't fully understand all that goes on when you chlorinate pools; no one does fully understand all that chemistry. It gets very, very complex. So as a practical matter, we all have something of the attitude, that "if it's working, even if we don't understand, we should leave it alone".
Again, I think you need to apply some P.O.P., let the chlorine drop, use the pool, and see if all works OK.

Re: just got good test kit. HELP PLEASE
just got home and latest figures are in
FF 15
CC 1 or slightly less
PH 7.3
TA 150 and dropping
Little concerned about the big drop in ff, it was 30ppm in the mourning
It 93 out and full sun all day would that do it
By the way
MY POOL IS SPARKLING MORE THAN ITS BEEN IN 3 YEARS

Re: just got good test kit. HELP PLEASE
mr impatient here.
Just tes CYA again.Diluted and regular
if I poor the mix in until I absolutely cant see the dot (and i have excellent eyes) it can be between 80 and 90ppm. If I pour it until the dot is mostly gone still seeing it faintly as a blurr(if that makes sense) its a 100ppm. Whats my answer.

It's between 80 and 100:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
. . . and that's close enough.
Really.

How are my numbers looking now. Still woried about the chlorine loss at that lower level. Doesthat mean the chlorine was doing its job after we swam in it last night.

I'm not messing with you, at least not much. The difference between 80 & 100 is pretty much the same as the "resolution" of the kit at that level and is NOT an important difference!
In all seriousness, what your pool needs MOST now is a HEAVY dose of P.O.P. -- Pool Owner Patience! You are making this too much work, and you need to chill!
Neither you nor I, nor Chem_Geek, can know everything that's happening in a pool. Read some of Chem_Geek's posts in the China Shop, if you want to get an idea how complicated it can be to understand EXACTLY what's going on . . . and that's only the stuff that's understood. There is plenty going on NO ONE understands.
When you try to understand exactly precisely what's happening in your pool . . . you are just beating your head against a brick wall.
And, what's ironic is, when you try to focus at that level, most people end up making their pool WORSE, because they try to over-control.

Very likely.
Again, let your chlorine drop to whatever, and then raise it to 10 daily. Do NOT worry about the other stuff, except aesthetics: does it look good? does it smell OK? is the color OK?
If the answer to those is, "Yes", and the chlorine goes above 10 daily and the pH is between 7.0 and 7.8 . . . IT'S OK FOR NOW!
Really!

Re: just got good test kit. HELP PLEASE
Thank you very much. Just took a dose of POP. One more question again. My wife is convinced that the chlorine level is giving my 7 year old runny poos. And says its bothering her too. Its just smells a little like chlorine to me and tastes salty. Anymore reassurance. thanks
-
Re: just got good test kit. HELP PLEASE
I don't think I can reassure you any more than I have.
Short of setting up two identical pools side by side one with high chlorine and one without, and putting your son in one for a week and then the other for a week, there's no way to prove that she's wrong. However, there are NO medical records supporting that, that I've ever seen or heard of.
On the other hand, digestive tract performance is well known -- medically speaking -- to be HIGHLY associated with anxiety. And though I'm having to use 'guess strips' here, there seem to be extremely high levels anxiety in, and around, your pool.
The fact is, this is not a problem we can treat chemically. Well, at least, not with pool chemicals.

Re: just got good test kit. HELP PLEASE
A thought, you say the pool tastes salty; ingesting enough salt water will give the observed GI symptom but it takes alot (prep. for colonoscopy usually involves drinking a gallon of highly concentrated salt water to get "cleaned out"). How salty? Like the ocean, like a pickle, like chips? Does your son drink alot of the pool? Does he lick the sunscreen?
-
Re: just got good test kit. HELP PLEASE
Dave, I think you are mistaken on what's used to prep for a colonoscopy. A gallon of "highly concentrated salt water" will kill you, if you don't throw it up!
-
Re: just got good test kit. HELP PLEASE
My bad, It came from the pharmacy in a gallon jug with white powder - filled with water and it tastes like alot like the ocean.
My observation really is: could the symptom be caused by something in the pool that's not chlorine? or could son of shub be ingesting something that's associated with pool activity?

Re: just got good test kit. HELP PLEASE
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
Thanks everyone for the help. I will now enjoy my pool and leave everyone alone unti. .l my pool burst into something unusual again. Thanks again. Scott

Re: just got good test kit. HELP PLEASE
Im back. Can someone tell me if its normal to smell the gases released while aerating. Inoticed when splashing you smell something funny.
-
Re: just got good test kit. HELP PLEASE
Chloramines -- incompletely oxidized goo -- stinks with an acrid chlorin-y smell, when you aerate.
If you are experiencing this, you probably need to look for the source -- not chlorine, the goo! Again, this is often NOT something added deliberately, but rather something like lotion, urine, sweat, cheap algaecides, pool additives, etc. It could be something 'natural' like tree sap (aka aphid pee*) if you have a tree overhanging the pool.
Ben
* Specially for you, Watermom. Aphips pee sugar water, after they remove the nutrients they need from tree sap. It's this aphid pee that ants drink -- ants 'farm' or 'herd' aphids, and that makes the stickly little droplets that get on your car when you park under a tree.
-
Re: just got good test kit. HELP PLEASE
Gee, thanks, Ben. I'll be afraid to touch my car now! You are such a wealth of knowledge. How have I made it all 29 years of my life without knowing all this stuff!!
-
Re: just got good test kit. HELP PLEASE
You know what they say, "Ignorance is bliss".
And clearly, that's true, because pool owner ignorance is what made the pool industry blissful!
Not to worry though: a little aphid pee never hurt anyone. After all, it's naturally 'green'!
