Well, when the PB installed I had no idea, I guess looking at what other people are running I guess it is a bit oversized. The PB said with a bigger filter I didnt have to backwash that often... he was right about that, heck, I think I even backwashed a couple extra times over the season cause it just felt like I needed to + so I didnt forget how to do it. The 1.5 is powering two jandy deck jets/4 returns and one dedicated kreepy line but nothing else. I also have a 300BTU heater which heats up the pool pretty quick, but I try not to use it for fear of my heat bill.
One of the PB's that quoted me had a 2 hp jacuzzi brand pump, I could only imagine the poor sand filter being overpowered.
