Got a 20000 gallon inground gunite

using about a gallon of bleach a day to keep chlorine at 3-4 ppm
(That's after i got it to 3ppm orginally and i'm putting it in at 8 pm)
thinking of raising my cya to 50 or 60 maybe higher70
sun is burning it up every day, if i dont add bleach in for a day
there's no chlorine the next day.
Any thoughts
I went to poolcalulator.com, and assuming you are at 0 chlorine, it would take 166 ounces of 6 % bleach to get you to 4 PPM.
I would say your CYA is just fine... but I am a newbie so I'll let the pros chime in..
It is pretty normal to add bleach every day for most pools. My pool is roughly 13,000 gallons give or take and I typically put in 2-3 qts. most days. I usually keep my cya around 40. I don't think your usage is out of line for a 20,000 gallon pool.
I don't know where you're from or what situation your pool is in, but I'm one of the few that intentionally keeps my CYA high. I find that with a CYA of less than 60, I typically lose 3-5 ppm chlorine daily (and more if I don't have a trichlor feeder running). I'm in a high heat, high humidity climate (Louisiana), and my pool is in full sun from dawn to dusk, so I intentionally run my CYA at the 80 ppm range. Takes more chlorine to get to my initial 5-10 operating range, but I find that I only lose about 1/2 the chlorine to sun.
The only problem with running the CYa up that high in your pool is that if it doesn't work, then you're back to draining and refilling to lower it--but you might try raising it by 10-20 and see what happens. If it doesn't work, it's not too hard to drain and refill to lose that extra 20 ppm.
