how to tell if gauge is broke or pump about to blow?

I just uncovered the pool today and adding water (drained it below the return over the winter).

When it had enough water I turned on the pump and everything sounds normal. But the gauge on the sand filter is maxing out at 100psi. I backwashed for a min but it wasn't dirty and psi didn't drop.

Is it just a bad gauge you think? Anyway to tell for sure other than just buying another gauge?

Does the gauge drop to 0 when the pump is off?

I'd suspect the gauge first.

However, how's the return action?

If you left the gauge outside at all when the air temps were below freezing, then it's a goner for sure....they are fairly inexpensive and easy to replace. Try replacing it and see what you get.

If it was really reading 100 psi I wouldn't want to be near the sand filter. I think they're typically rated for 50 psi max. Besides, regular pool pumps can't hit that high pressure. Gauge is croaked.
