Plaster worn through

Son-In-Law and Daughter just bought a house with a pool. Ingound plaster, guess about 18,000 gallons in the Dallas area. There are many spots where the plaster is worn through to the concrete underneath. Some places like stair edges, maybe, but a line by the light, some large patches (baseball to softball sized) in the curve, couple more smaller ones on the vertical walls, apparently here and there. Not chipped, but looks like it is worn as the sides are smooth beveled (almost like it was sanded down to the concrete). Anyone ever seen this before?
Prior owner used a Polaris 360 as the cleaner.

I have a Polaris 360 and worn plaster but I'm sure it didn't cause the worn plaster. You're in the same boat I am--you're not sure how old the plaster is. I know my pool was built 23 years ago and I have some idea about how diligent the other owners were about service (or weren't). The P360 is a very good cleaner. A new plaster job seems to run $3k-4k. Not keeping the water in balance can contribute to plaster deterioration. Sounds like that pool just needs the loving attention to detail that it will start getting!:)

Sounds like you need to replaster (no expert but went through the same thing). If you can afford it though try and get it tiled next time. I tiled my pool instead and absolutely love it - plus it seems much easier to maintain (and looks more impressive).

Sahara, how much more did it cost you to tile it than to plaster it?

About $12,000 including everything (had to get electrician for new breaker, new light etc). Pool was a mess with large pockmarks of plaster gone. Even had two turtles put in tile on the bottom of the pool. Tiling can be up to 3 times more expensive then replastering but figure it is for life and won't have to be done again and maintenance is easier. Plus you add about $35,00 - $50,000 value to your home depending on where you live ( I live in Hawaii). Finally it is just really beautiful. I had to scrimp and save to do it but am very happy .
