What I've read about these in general is not to use them in recessed or enclosed fixtures. Reason given is the heat buildup will kill the electronics. The heat generated is obviously much less than an incandescent but will it raise the temperature enough to kill the electronics? Have no idea. I've been using the 14 and 26 watt varieties in enclosed fixtures for several years and haven't lost one yet.

What about an LED replacement? Thay cost more but I replaced my 500 watt with one, it is a color changing one paid about $100. Got it from ebay, it was a direct replacement for the screw in floodlight type bulb.
