need a chlorinator with bbb method????

Before I start. Huge Thank You to everyone in this forum. I'm in my 2nd season of pool maint. and have a crystal clear pool w/o having to go the the pool store for chems. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! O.K., so...Do people still use chlorine feeders along with the bbb method? If so, what type of chlorinator, and if not, how do you keep chlorine levels up during heavy swimmer loads?

I'm still a noobie (just got a house with a pool last August), but I haven't used the chlorinator since last winter. Bleach only for me at this point. You just have to test your water on a regular basis. I usually test every other day and add my bleach accordingly.

B-B-B is really a way of thinking. You CAN use a chlorinator if you want, but you understand that it adds CYA and acid to your pool and you MUST allow for that.

Using B-B-B means you understand the relationship between CYA and FC, and between T/A and pH.

The idea behind B-B-B is that there's no mystery to pool chemistry. You don't NEED Chlorine tablets, powder, pre-mixed "shock" and Liquid Chlorine--all give you chlorine just as ordinary Bleach does.

You don't need "pH Up!" or other fancy chems to raise your pool's pH level, when ordinary 20 Mule Team Borax will do the job better, and ordinary Washing Soda is NO DIFFERENT than the expensive chems--it's the same stuff as Soda Ash or "pH Up", "Balance Pak" and other hyped overpriced chems.

You don't need "Total Alkalinity Raiser" at $12 for 4 pounds--it's chemically nothing more than...Arm&Hammer Baking Soda!


So....using a chlorinator and B-B-B successfully means you understand what the chlorinator is good for, and what problems it can cause, and you use it wisely.

Carl is right of course but an inline chlorinator can be a very handy item.

Because my CYA droppped to near zero over the winter/spring I've been using tri-chlor in my inline chlorinator since the first of June. Regular heavy rain since then has continued to dilute my pool water so I'll probably be able to use tri-chlor through mid-August or even later before my CYA gets back to where I want it (30-40 ppm).

So long as my water needs the additional CYA, I find using tri-chlor preferable to bleach. I don't have to add bleach every day or two and the tri-chlor helps keep my constantly rising pH in check.

Two other advantage of an inline chlorinator: (1) Tri-chlor is actually a cheaper chlorine source than bleach; (2) a chlorinator also lets you go on vacation without having to have someone add bleach to your pool while your gone.

Bottom line for me: Bleach is my primary chlorine source because it does the primary job with the least side effects but trichlor and an inline chlorinator have their time and place.

Thanks again. I know that heat and sun eat away at clorine, but I wasn't sure if chlorinators were also used to keep the level from dropping as much. Thank You.!!!
