I have a Hayward Power Flox LX 3/4 hp single speed. The pump is in excellent condition, housing, strainer etc. I found a 2 spd motor only for 99.00 plus shipping. Seller states it fits industry standard for 48 Y frame pumps. It has a 2 year guarantee.
Is it a difficult procedure to change out the motor and install the power cord?
This seems to be a much cheaper way to get a 2 speed pump as brand new ones I have seen cost in the upper 300s.
Any comments or suggestions is greatly appreciated.
It's not a hard thing but you need to know what you are doing. Where did you find the motor? I'm thinking of doing the same thing.

seems like a pretty good deal. also read where someone said on the forum that some 2 spd pumps have to have different electrical wiring.
i can take things apart and put them back together okay. i did see a screw holding the back cover of the pump where the power cord is. i assume that is where i would have to connect the new one.
i also see bolts holding the pump to where the intake housing for the hose is and the strainer.
i assume i would take those bolts out, replace pump and the shaft would insert where the old shaft came out. may have to line the splines up?
I was brand new to pools last season and to start things off my pump did not work. Taking it apart was definitely easy. I took the motor out and could have easily put in a new one. Once it was determined that the motor was shot though, I couldn't find a deal like you found, so I just bought a whole new pump.

I think you must have 230v feed for a 2 speed pump.
It can be either 115 or 230.
Depends who makes it. Some are 230V only. Hayward 2 speed pumps for in-ground pools are usually 230V only. But I think I have seen Pentair 115/230V 2 speed pumps. Both make 115V 2 speed pumps for above ground pools.Quote:

As mentioned in the other thread, you might want to check the impeller for the 1-speed version of the pump to see if it's the same as the impeller for the 2-speed version of the pump. The operating manual might have an exploded view of the pump showing all its parts. Someone mentioned that the impellers are usually matched to the power of the motor.
If you DO do it, report back as I'd be curious how it works out for you.

I just ordered a 2 speed motor for my Whisperflo. I got the same HP rating. I talked to a few stores, they said the impeller isn't worth changing. I'll find out soon. There is probably a small difference and I will never know.
