Replacing current pump with two speed

My above ground pool pump keeps over heating and kicking out. I am not sure what is causing this and if anyone does please let me know what the cause might be. It run 24 hours a day 3 1/2 months a year and is 8 years old. I am looking at a possible replacement of either a Pentair two speed 1 HP 340204 or a Hayward Matrix 1 HP 2 SPEED ABOVE GROUND PUMP PMP HAY SP15922S . I am not sure how the two compare nor am I sure how you switch from low to high. Does anyone run these motors and if so how do you switch from low to high? I only have 110 running out to my filter/pump so I don't have the option of 220. If anyone has either of these pumps or know which would be the better pump please let me know. I currently have a 1.5 HP Hayward Power Flo LX with a 200 lb. filter. I am reading I need to switch to the 1 HP to not over drive my filter and to get a two speed to save both money on my electric bill and to get the pool cleaned more efficiently on the low speed.

I have a 1 hp Pentair Dynmo pump on a DE filter and it seems to run great. I only have it running for about 8 hours a day. I assumed that at full operating capacity my filter runs at 40 GPM and filters my 24' pool in about 6 hours and I added a little more time for good measure. I am also filtering it more on Saturday due to pool vacuuming.

Is there a reason you run it 24/7? I usually have it on from 3 to 7:30PM and 3 to 6:30 AM. Have you tried to lower the time on filtering?

To my understanding a DE filter can run on a timer but a sand filter usually should not because it doesn't filter as well as a DE and should run 24 hours a day especially in hot weather.
I was just considering going to a two speed pump to both clean the water more efficiently on low if I am understanding this whole thing correctly and save on my electric bill in the process. To my understanding the high speed is only needed for a high bather load, to back wash and for sweeping. I am not sure when I order a two speed pump if the pump itself has a switch to go from low to high or if I need to order a special switch and wire it accordingly. I was just hoping someone with a two speed could tell me how they like theirs and how the switching works. Is yours a two speed?

I've been running my sand filter on a timer since the day the pool was installed--now in season 5 for this pool.

You need to run your pump long enough to turn over your water once in 24 hours. That's all. At this point in the season (late May, now beginning of June) I run on high about 14 hours a day SOLELY because I want the skimmer to run--we are having the worst pollen season in a decade and it sits on the surface.

Soon I'll go to low, with the same schedule. I also run it based on the sun and my solar panels.

Sand filters don't filter better by additional water cycles. They do filter better at lower speeds because more stuff can get trapped.

My 2 speed is falling-off-a-log simple: There's a toggle switch on the back of the motor housing. That's it!
