2-1/2lbs of CYA disappeared in 1 day. Dissolved or dispersed?
I'm up and running and with all the rain we've had in the spring here in the Northeast, my CYA is all but gone. I had 1/2 of a 5lb CYA jar and a 8# jar of tri-chlor pucks from last year so I thought I'd go through those to raise the CYA back up (I run ~50ppm).
I threw the CYA in a stocking, tied the end and threw it in the skimmer last night. To my surprise, it was all gone in the morning. TOok another CYA reading and there's been no significant change.
So... where did the CYA go? Did it dissolve or simply disperse and is stuck in the DE inside the filter?
Re: 2-1/2lbs of CYA disappeared in 1 day. Dissolved or dispersed?
Based on posts I've read here, dispersed would be the right word. AYLAD, one of the moderators, says not to test your CYA for a week after adding it, even if it looks to have dissolved. If you go ahead and add more right away, you may end up with a reading like 100 or more and the only way to lower it is to drain some of the pool water so that refilling will dilute the CYA. Just open a cold can of POP(pool owner patience):)

Don't test for at least a week, and don't backwash for several days to a week. The CYA is in the filter most likely.....is yours sand?
Don't do what I did 2 years ago, opened to a green swamp which gobbled up my CYA, cleaned up mess, then added the appropriate amount of CYA, tested 2 days later and still no CYA. Went back to the pool store and said hey, my CYA didn't budge? They promptly sold me another jug and had me add. My CYA was 90 at the end of this process. Oh, I was still using pucks (not hockey) at the time.
