Low cost Filter for water feature pump

I am looking for an inexpensive or cheap filter to put on my water feature pump in order to keep my deck jets clean. They have internal filters but they clog up often due to particulate matter that is pulled in. Mainly small leaves, flower pods and cottonwood seeds.

Are there any ideas on how to filter using the strainer basket or the like. Anyone know of a inexpensive filter system that would work on a 2.5 HP whisper flow pump, flow rate of about 65-70 GPM. I was scanning Flebay for a low cost cartridge filter but hate to throw $ 200.00 to cleaning the deck jets. Also thought of buying a used DE filter but have not found any yet. Ideas?
