I have a gunite pool.
You need salt that is at least 99% pure, with no additives or anti-caking agents. You can usually find this kind of salt at Home Depot or at a pool store. You can aslo use rock salt for water softeners, but it will take much longer to dissolve. If you want to increase the level from 0PPM to say 3000PPM, then you would need to add around 560lbs, or 254kg of salt.
You may want to start at say 450lbs and let it dissolve and circulate. Test the salt level and add some more as needed. I found its easier to add salt to raise the level than go to high and try to lower it or swim with a little salt taste to the water for quite awhile. Just a thought
Morton brand solar salt is what we used.
I bought Pool Salt at Lowes... Disolved real fast .
Get your water tested before adding any salt so you know what your starting point is.. Mine was about 700ppm. Add to the lower end of your target and test again. I run mine about 3300-3400ppm and both I and the SWCG love it .
I guess the first question should be, What kind of chlorinator do you have and what is the recomended salt level? If it is an existing pool, there will be a salt residual in the water to start with. Chlorine is salt based so it is normal to find existing salt levels of 2000 ppm to 3000 ppm. In new water, the calculation is relatively easy. Please let us know what you have and we will get you a number.

Don't use rock salt. My PB flagged a big no,no!!
Today was my 1st time I had to add salt in the past 4 months. Went to my local grocery store and picked up two 40lbs bags of 99% pure salt by Morton.
Cost me $4.79 a bag.
I was worried about the pellets, but poured it all in. With about 2-3 hrs it was all desolved. To help it some use your brush to skirt it around your main drains. if you don't have maindrains I was told to use your skimmer manual vac.
Salt I got. In 3hrs from 2700ppm . it is now at 3100ppm @ 60
