Can you clear pea green soup?

A friend of my brother's was complaining recently about his pool. He'd been pool stored by the same place that got me last year. He asked me where I bought my stuff, and I told him about BBB. He was intrigued, said his pool was green and he was going to give them a few more days them maybe call me.

Well, he called last Friday night. I was leaving town the next day, so I went right over. What a mess... :(

He's got a 24' x 4' AG pool. Multiport valve was leaking through waste and he was losing water, so he called the pool store. They came out and put a valve on the waste outlet to stop the flow :( Two days later, his multiport blew the gasket completely. He called them on a Thursday, owner's wife (who runs the fricking place) told him her husband would have to order the part, didn't know when he'd be able to but they'd get to it asap. He said he was worried about the water going bad because it was nice and clear, they told him it wouldn't, don't worry cause if it does, he'd just have to shock :(

I'm standing there looking at his pool and If I were a giant all I would need is some crackers and a big spoon. Looks like pea soup :( I told him if it was mine I'd drain it and start over. He didn't want to do that.

I roughly calculated the shock level he'd need to reach based on a WAG about his CYA level (they gave him one bag of sock it :( ) since he uses pucks in the skimmer to chlorinate. I told him how much and what type of bleach to buy, and to hit it immediately, a few hours later before he went to bed and again before he left for work the next morning, and to keep adding the shock level until the pool started to clear from green to blue. He has test sticks, told him about those and recommended at least the walmart drop kit, but to use the sticks if he had to and to slow the bleach down when he was getting a reading. Told him to run filter 24/7 and to watch filter pressure and backwash as needed, which would hopefully be often. I left and he left to go get bleach.

I just got back late last night, he's working today, so no idea how things are going. I'm skeptical he'll get it clear, but who knows.
