Coverting from Bacqui-hell I mean Bacqucil to Chlorine

Ok...so we have a Inground concrete pool that came with our house we
bought last summer. Last summer, we moved in beginning of July but didn't
use the pool at all due to my inability to get a clear pool with BacquiHELL.
We closed the pool with a substancial amount of green algae in it (hoping
winter would kill it off).

This summer, I went to Leslie's Pool company and followed their
instructions for converting to Chlorine and removing the Bac from our pool.

My main problem is, we have a ton of dead algae at the bottom of the
pool left over from multiple algae blooms last summer. I've been vacuuming
and backwashing out the wazoo but still don't have all the dead algae out of
the pool yet.

Question - should I finish cleaning out all the old algae before adding the
chlorine or "shocking"? The water is a hazy green...I can see the bottom of
the shallow end..but the dead end is hard to see to the bottom. I have noticed algae starting to regrow on the sides of the pool.

I do have a tub of the Chlorine pucks but haven't started using them
yet as I thought the algae would eat up and waste all the chlorine added.

Inground plaster pool...not sure of the exact gallons...I'm estimating
22,000 gallons. 500 square feet in kidney shape is what the pool
manufacturer told me.

You need to get chlorine in the pool ASAP before you grow another large crop of algae. The dead algae on the bottom isn't going to bother it--continue to vaccuum it to waste, and it will eventually go away (keep your filter on 24/7, too). Need to know numbers for Cl, CYA, pH, and TA in order to tell you how high the Cl needs to be to kill the current bloom, but you do definitely need to shock the pool.

How do I test for CYA?

The WalMart 5-way kit that sells for around $15 has a CYA test in it, or you could take it to a pool store to have it tested but either way you need to do it quickly because algae is growing in your pool as we speak..............
