Using the BBB Method - How often do I need to Shock?
I'm following the BBB method. I'm maintaining a pretty steady level of fc in my pool and at the same time slowly aiming for the correct cya level. My fc level remains the same overnight & drops during the day. I add bleach in the evening.
My question is how often do I need to shock?

From what I have learned form the forum is when your combined chlorine is greater than 0.5 ppm. Some have mentioned after a heavy rain, or heavy swimmer load. I have had both with out the need to shock. I did add extra bleach after testing the free chlorine and combined chlorine to boost my free chlorine.

Only when there is a need to. In the past, I was shocking everyweek, just like the pool store recommended.
This year I shocked when we opened, and haven't needed to since.
As long as you stay ahead of your pool, shocking is rarely needed :)

Same here. Do you have a kit that tests free and combined chlorine? As already mentioned shock when cc>0.5. As a safe measure if you have a large amount of people in the pool for a party or something I am sure it wouldn't hurt to throw in a little extra when the party is over. Download the bleach calculator if you haven't already. Great little tool:)

Thanks for the advice. I usually only test for FC. I have the Taylor DPD test kit, so I guess its no big deal to test for CC as well. I'll keep an eye on the CC as well.
