I would love to have Ben's test kit but can't wait. I got the Taylor deluxe DPD kit from Leslies and the chlorine test is only color coded to 5ppm. How can I test for higher levels?
Also, the kit doesn't test for CYA. Is the CYA test in a separate kit? What is the best place to get it? The girl at Leslies was clueless. She tested my water with a test strip and said my water was perfect. My water is green and cloudy.
Since you can't wait for Ben's kit, I suggest the Taylor 2006 kit. It'll do what you need.
Leslie's on-line sells a Taylor FAS-DPD kit and a "Chlorine FAS-DPD Service Test Kit" made by Taylor and essentially a 2006. The first is just the chlorine test kit.
FAS-DPD sounds like DPD but it's not the same and can easily test up to 50ppm of FC, tests for CC as well, and, can even test up to 100ppm.
The Taylor version of the FAS-DPD test kit uses 4 components:
1) a test vial that measures 10ml and 25ml of water
2) FAS-DPD powder--Taylor's code is: "R-0870 DPD Powder" (it's FAS-DPD--the name is confusing)
3) FC Reagent---Taylor: "R-0871 FAS-DPD Titrating Reagent Chlorine"
4) CC Reagent ---Taylor: "R-0003 DPD Reagent #3"(?)
You fill the tube to 10ml, dump in just enough powder to turn the water pink, then add R-0871 one drop at a time until it turns clear. Each drop indicates .5ppm of FC.
You then add five drops of R-0003 to the same water. If the water turns at all pink, you have CC. You then add R-0871 again, drop by drop till it clears. Each drop indicates .5ppm of CC.
You add FC and CC to get TC.
Best chlorine test available to home-owners. Ben's kit uses the same chemicals, but I don't know if the 234 uses all Taylor--the 233 did.
If all you need is the chlorine test, the on-line kit from Leslie's costs about a third of what their full test kit is.
But look for FAS-DPD.
The Taylor K-2006C has the 2.0 oz re-agents. I bought it at Leslie's for $84.00. It's the same as the K-2006 from what I can tell on Taylor's website except for the re-agent size.

I called two local Leslie's and neither has a Taylor 2006 kit. I was recently at one of the Leslies where I bought the "deluxe" Taylor kit (it was their most expensive kit at under $30).
If I buy their Chlorine test kit (test range 0-20ppm) and separate CYA kit, will that be enough or are there other tests included in Bens kit or the Taylor 2006 kit that I need?
My pool has been green and cloudy for a week now. My wife brought another water sample in to Leslies and they said "oh my god, you have over 10ppm chlorine. Don't put any more chlorine in." I now have something called "Pool First Aid". As far as I can tell it contains an enzyme. But it says not to use it if you are shocking the pool.
Your best bet for clearing this pool is to post your current water testing numbers as best you can, and then let somebody here take a look. I wouldn't be adding any extra stuff that the pool store claimed as a miracle cure such as "Pool First Aid." Especially since that pool store doesn't seem to have an understanding of water chemistry - thus their admonishment about your chlorine being too high when that is just what you need to clear the pool.
You probably won't find the kits at the Leslie's stores--but they do have it on-line.
