AG Liner Install

I am planning on installing an AG overlapping liner with flat coping on my 18x32 pool in the next week or two. I have been doing my homework and reading prior posts at this site and it has been very infomative, especially the responses by hrsdennis:)
My questions are:
what site would you purchase a liner on line from, best price, service, and quality?

the pros and cons of different liner thicknesses?

has any one come accross a good step by step instructions for ag liner installations?

I found these step by step instructions for a liner install recently. I'm going to follow all of their steps with the exception I'll install the liner over the top rails and hold in place with clothes pins and binder clips and begin filling with water. I'll slowly release the clips and feed more liner into the pool as I add water. Finally removing the top rails and then replacing after getting the liner in place.

Hi, I have purchased liners from In The Swim and PoolGearPlus with no problems from either. There have been some other good suggestions here recently also.

Either the 20 or 25 mil would be fine. Just depends on the budget.

I do have a couple of things to add to the liner installation instructions. When you pull the liner over the top rails you will find the liner is held snuggly at every upright connection. I do not use cloths pins at this stage. If the liner is not tight enough to keep from slipping, be very careful with clips and pins. It is easy to tear a liner doing that.

When a liner is stretched in this fashion there is no need for a shop vac. When the water is three inches from the wall, shut the water off and start working your way around the pool a few rails at a time. By pulling the liner snug at this point and then turning the water back on the sides will stretch in without wrinkles or air pockets. Timing is the key to a perfect install.

The instructions in the previous post are for a different method entirely. Not wrong just different. For me it would not work. Stretching the wrinkles out of a liner is far more effective than sucking and brooming. I would never let a customers pool stand without the support of the top rails. One good dust devil and it’s time to rebuild the whole thing. My last problem with this method is those darned uprights. How are you going to get that liner between the wall and the uprights without tearing it? Very carefully I guess.

One last tip. You should not have to wait until the pool is almost full to know if your liner is going to fit without pulling out. Allow the liner to stretch when you are starting to fill. When you take the tops off to pull the liner over you should have plenty of vinyl to work with. Take that liner and fold it. You want an even 1 ½” on the outside of the pool and the rest folded back to the inside. Now you have two layers of vinyl over the wall. It is much more difficult for the liner to slip when done this way. It looks a lot nicer also.

Thanks for the advice. Just finished wire wheeling and spray painting the rust spots. Now to drill out the rusted screws that bolt in the top rails and etc.
Any advice on removing the rusted screws.

I recently order a liner from poolstore.com out of Calif. They seemed to have the best price and luckily for me they drop shipped the liner from the manufacturer in NY, so I got it in 2 days since I'm in NJ.

I ordered a 20 ga liner and replaced a 25 ga. Although the 20 seems ok, it seems a lot thinner than a 25. If I had to do it again, Id get the 25 especially since the price difference is not that much.

For me the install was a frustrating experience, I tried to do it like Dennis suggested but I have a wrap around deck on half the pool, so I had to install it the traditional way. The best advice I can give about a liner install is PATIENCE.

Hi Snapperbig, I carry a small pair of Vise Grips in my work bag at all times. Very seldom is there a screw they won't take out. One trick you can use is if one screw has you beat, get out all the rest of the screws on that rail and then lift it slightly and move it back and forth. That should loosen the last screw.

posguy, decks do mess my system up a bit. I do the same thing as you, take the pool apart and get in. Not always a bad thing when it's 110 here in Arizona.:) But I would prefer to stretch them in. Just not always the case.

Im thinking about replacing the liner on my 28'AGP as well, mostly because I just hate the thing. It is solid blue and I just about kill myself on cleaning every year. My question is do you actually have to pull the old liner out to install a new one? Thanx! Jola
