My delima, would I better better off with a two speed pump and run it 24/7 or keep my single speed pump and install a timer to run 6-8 hours a day? or both?
any advice?

I think a two speed and a timer is the ideal option. Unless you have a spa or "water features" like a waterfall you'll run the two speed on low a few hours a day to filter. You'll use high speed to vacuum.
I run my 2-speed on LO about 12 hours/day and that's fine. It's a balance between how many gpm your pump is putting out at the return, and how many gallons your pool has. If your pool is 20,000 gallons and your low speed generates about 14gpm, then, yes, run it 24/7. But if your low speed generates 28gpm, then only 12 hours is needed.
There is also some debate on whether you need to turn over your water fully every 24 hours. The numbers I gave are the MAXIMUM needed if you are doing that. If you decide that turning over only 3/4 of your water ever 24 hours, then you'd run it 18 hours at 14gpm and 9 hours at 28gpm...now this is low speed, too.
Neither. With a single speed, 4 hours is probably all you need and with a two that might be all you need too. I get away with 4 hours per day and 3 three of those hours is on low speed.
But what's the volume of the pool?
I have no water features. pool is approx. 20k gallons.
Mine is 20k too so a reduced run time is certain possible. Most people find they can get away with very little run time if they just try. So to I would go with both a two speed and a timer.
