Is 60 oz liquid chlorine per day standard for a 9,000 gall pool
My CYA is 40. The pool is 9,000 gals each night the FC is 6 by days end the FC is 3 so I add 60 oz of liquid chlorine nightly. Does this seem too much or about right. Lots of strong sun as I live in Hawaii, about the same latitude as Mexico City, and I am assuming stonger UV than most places.
Looking forward to your replies.

A drop of 3ppm is a lot, espec with that CYA. Have you tried shocking the pool to about 15ppm and seeing if that solve it? Alternatively, you could raise CYA to 60ppm and run a minimum FC of 5ppm. Your sun is intense, but in the summer you get less of it than us in higher latitudes--in NJ we are due west of NYC, which curiously, is EXACTLY the same latitude as Madrid (check it out). We went to the UK for a wedding a few years ago in July and the sun didn't set until 10:45!

Thank you for your reply.
Two weeks ago I shocked at 20 ppm for 3 days with pump on for 3 days, maintaining that level nearly the entire time. It did get cloudy and and the filter pressure level rose quite significantly. I back washed it and the pool has been clear since then.
As the pool has an ongoing iron problem due to airborne red dirt (ferric oxide aka rust) I use Omni's Stain Treat to keep the metal in solution could that be having any effect on the levels?
Do think it would be best to keep raising the CYA level by 5 ppm until it levels off or should I shock it again? Finally what would be considered a normal daily drop in FC?
Re: Is 60 oz liquid chlorine per day standard for a 9,000 gall pool
If your chlorine demand is caused by something in your water, then shocking it is the only way to get rid of it. Have you tested for cc? that would tell you if it's the sun or your pool water that's consuming your chlorine. If you have no cc, then I'd consider raising your CYA and see if that helps.

Aylad thank you for your reply.
FC and TC are the same, therefore no CC, so I will start raising it by 5 ppm until I can get it to hold.
What do think the daily reduction should be in ppm?
Will advise when it holds, this may help others in Hawaii.
Re: Is 60 oz liquid chlorine per day standard for a 9,000 gall pool
I don't usually disagree with Carl and Jan, but I don't think it is that unusual to lose 3ppm in a day. Especially if it is really hot and sunny. I, too, will sometimes lose 3 in a day with cya around 35-40. Of course, as they suggested, you can try and raise your cya some and see if that helps.
Re: Is 60 oz liquid chlorine per day standard for a 9,000 gall pool
Thank you Watermom.
I am raising it to 50 as of this evening (Saturday 9pm - Hawaii Time).
I will advise you all of the results in 5 days; this gives it some time to establish continuity.
Aloha

I wouldn't mind having that problem if I could live in Hawaii! [green with envy]

I hope it's not a vinyl lined pool--you are risking damaging the liner pushing FC to 50ppm. About the highest you can go is 25ppm but only if the stabilizer level (CYA) is over 100ppm.
Re: Is 60 oz liquid chlorine per day standard for a 9,000 gall pool
Carl, I think he meant he was raising the cya to 50, not the FC.
