Need advice on in ground pool restoration

First off I'd like to say hi, and thanks in advance. We recently bought a house (repo) with an inground vinyl liner pool. The pool is in terrible shape to say the least. I know exactly nothing about swimming pools. I've had 1 guy come out and take a look, said it was too big of a job for him. I have pictures, that I will try and post, but basically my question is, how big of an undertaking is this resto going to be, an approximate cost, any moneys aving DIY tips, or cut your losses and run type of advice is appreciated.
