What does Recirculate do on my pool filter?

I have a Hayward DE filter for a 16'X32' pool. I backwash the filter based on the pressure gauge reading and I use the rinse option after I backwash but what does the Recirculate option do? Thanks in advance for your answers.

The "Recirculate" position, found on multiport valves for sand and DE filters, just allows the pump to continue to circulate the water, while bypassing the filter.
