Confused about size of filter sand

Im running a hayward power flo lx 1.5 hp pump and I have a hayward s200 sand filter, I realize now this pump is way to big for this filter. We bought them seperate off of craigslist 3 seasons ago and everything was great. This season we started with a frog pond, I have all that in a another post. My question here is we used the sand that came with the sand filter for 3 seasons, this year when the water wouldnt clear I figured the sand needed changed. We got replaced the sand with quikrete pool filter sand from home depot. the specs of the sand on there website says the sand id between .85-.425mm My hayward sand filter says it requires .45-.55mm is this the same? the water just absolutely wont clear, Ive thought about maybe changing impellers to slow the flow rate or what about adding some DE?
