1st closing of pool, cover, water question

Well just had our pool completed with half surround deck, 16 x 32 Doughboy.
Have all lines dry and pump removed and ball valves closes.drained 6 in below return.
Skimmer hose removed and light/return hose unhooked and bulb removed.
I have the winter cover over the pool with the cable strap tightened .
I added water on top of pool cover, but that is where I think I added too much.
The water would never flow evenly across the cover as hoped, thinking I would add a inch through out the whole cover surface.
What I ended up with was an area about 12 feet long and 8 feet wide about a foot deep in the center at the deepest.
Doesn't really seem as of now to be pulling on the sides of cover. If I try to pull up on cover and try do distribute the water, it does look good but settles awhile later.Pool co. We bought pool from said to add a inch of water, sounds good but it wont happen.I tried but it looked like all it did was rain on top.
Thanks for any info, I still have time to remove some if it sounds like too much before it freezes here in Iowa.
