Once again a great forum and super leaders.
I bet alot of folks have the same question so I will ask:
When using the Taylor kit, I put a white foam board in the background and when I read the colors. Is this a good technique? On the Taylor video, I've seen the guy point it into the sky.
What do you recommend? And for the CYA?

That is fine to do that. Poconos (another one of the moderators) always holds his test block against white paper. For CYA, you need to hold the test block at waist level so that you are looking down into it and you don't need the white behind it.
If memory serves me correctly, Taylor says to examine the colored water by raising it in non-direct sunlight pointed to the NORTH. And so that is what I do.
Also, when doing the CYA test, you hold the water at your waist-level in non-direct sunlight.
I use a white towel as background. The pH colours especially change depending on whether you have green grass or a blue sky behind them.

WHY? Anyone who has ever walked out of the house wearing two pieces of clothing that looked liked they matched until they got in the daylight knows about this problem. The term for the phenomenon is metamerism. Different light sources make for different colors. If a test is designed to be read in daylight (after all, pools are mostly outdoors!), artificial lighting, i.e. incandescent and fluorescent, will affect your color perception. Sunglasses do too, so take them off."
