Can you swim with High CYA
I have read conflicting info on this. However in reading some of your posts it appears that people have left their cya high and just switched to Bleach instead of a Tri-chor or Bi-clor product and just adjusted the FC higher.
So I guess I have 2 questions- is it ok to swim with an elevated CYA and is it safe to swim with a FC of 10-15ppm?
Thjanks for help in advance. I am driving myself crazy trying to lower the cya in a fiberglas pool. It hot here in LA and my pool water looks great and I really would like to be swimming.
Re: Can you swim with High CYA
The higher the cya in your pool, the higher you have to keep your chlorine level - it won't hurt you. Here is the chart:
Stabilizer . . . . . . Min. FC . . . . Max FC . . . 'Shock' FC
=> 0 ppm . . . . . . . 1 ppm . . . . . 3 ppm . . . . 10 ppm
=> 10 - 20 ppm . . . . 2 ppm . . . . . 5 ppm . . . . 12 ppm
=> 30 - 50 ppm . . . . 3 ppm . . . . . 6 ppm . . . . 15 ppm
=> 60 - 90 ppm . . . . 5 ppm . . . . . 10 ppm . . .. 20 ppm
=> 100 - 200 ppm . . . 8 ppm . . . . . 15 ppm . . .. 25 ppm
When you get your chlorine number high, the only thing that may happen is that your bathing suits may fade a little. It won't hurt you.
Re: Can you swim with High CYA
I live near Shreveport, and my CYA stays 80-90 ppm (intentionally--my pool gets direct sun all day). I keep Cl level at 7-9 ppm all the time, and swimming is no problem.

Other than draining and refilling, is there another way to lower CYA?
Re: Can you swim with High CYA
It's the only practical way. The other way is to let your pool go really, really, really green and let the algae break it down. I'd rather drain/refill!
