Filter and pump recommendations

I'm doing a partial DIY fiberglass install 14X30, 3-6 ft deep, and the DIY equipment package the company put together is expensive to say the least! The pool will be approxiametly 16K gallons and have a 2 foot raised tanning bar with waterfall into the pool. Pump will be about 50 foot away from the pool. I'd like to put together my own package which the company is OK with.

A couple questions:

Will a 1 hp pump be sufficient with the distance from pump to pool?

Is the filter choice just a personal preference or is it also based on type of pool (FG), gallons (16K), and usage? (just summer months in Maryland, non-heated at least for the first year, minimal people in it. My wife, 2 year old, and occasionally a couple friends on weekends.)

I've already decided on an Autopilot SWG (dig-48?). I'd like recommendations on the pump and filter. Brands and/or specs. Their package was a 1 hp Sta-Rite. The builder said I might need a 1.5 hp pump because of the distance from the pump to pool.
