Replacing a DE filter. Piece of cake!

It's been a while since I've been in here, but now with the swim season just around the corner, of course I can't just have an uneventful start without SOME kind of drama...

A few weeks ago when mowing my yard (yes, in February, having to mow is a travesty), I noticed that the soil around my equipment bay was wet and spongy, and the equipment deck was covered with water. My heart sunk.

Turns out the DE filter housing had a leak SOMEWHERE near the base, because the entire exterior that was visible was bone dry.

The water was also dirty, and DE was spewing into the pool every time the pump cycled.

I decided it was time to replace not just the grids, but the whole unit.

I did some calling around, found a replacement (same make but not the same model) and was about to call the installation number when I realized that the new filter and old filter used exactly the same connections, same spacing, and same height -- no plumbing required.

I took my 17 year old with me to the shop, bought a new filter and a box of DE. Both were 20% off.. couldn't beat that!

After returning home, in all of about 30 minutes we had the thing out and replaced.

Easiest, most trouble-free pool repair I've ever done!

Once the old unit was out, I found a 1.5" long hairline crack at the very bottom. Hard to see, but the DE crust was evident. Little crack, lots of water.

My pool is going on its 13th season this year. So far the only equipment I haven't replaced is the Polaris booster pump. I'm sure that's just around the corner. ;)
