What is the consensus on the use of this (new to me) equipment? My pool is in a windy location and collects dirt and sand. I'm looking for something to help get the fine stuff. I have lots of benche and step area.

There's a fairly complete discussion, here:

And, on Amazon, there are a number of reviews:
Pool Blaster Max CG
I don't have any personal knowledge of the units.
BTW, welcome to the PoolForum and thanks for the subscription!
I have a much older version I've used for years. It was called a Pool Buster (like Dust Buster) back then and was a new item/idea. I don't know if the new version comes with the extra-fine filter but I had to order it as an accessory. The only time I've used a conventional water vacuum since is when my unit's battery failed...that seems to be the one weakness, occasionally you get a bad battery in a unit that doesn't hold a charge well. But that's a warranty item.
But since then it's worked wonderfully well. I can vacuum my 19,000 gallon pool with it much more quickly than with a water vac, and you can even use it for quick "touch ups" while swimming...send a kid around with it and they think pool maint is a game! The special fine filter really works...there is nothing that passes through it the way it does on some of the bag-based vacs. I must have mine 6 or 7 years...long enough to be sun-faded!
