Cover for oversized in-ground spa
My spa is 11' by 14' at its longest and widest points and it is somewhat kidney shaped. There is a handrail reaching in lower than the surrounding deck level and there is a rock waterfall. These present a bit of a challenge for selecting a cover. I have a small dog that I would be worried would mistake a floating cover for a solid surface and drown. So, I need a cover that can be cut to fit and be secured somehow so it would hold a small dog, just 12 pounds. Thanks for any suggestions.

Welcome to the Forum!
It sounds to me like what you want is a custom safety cover. However, these are on the pricey side:(
I can help you on measuring for one and give installation tips but you'll have to look for the cover yourself (Meyco, Loop-Lok, Merlin and Cover Logic are all good brands).
I should also point out that a safety cover will require you to drill in anchors to fully secure it.
We can give more info on what will probably be required if you'll tell us more about the deck and waterfall.

Thank Ted. I attached a link to a photo and would sincerely appreciate your further input. BTW, do you know how long it takes to get unrestricted? This is my 4th post and I joined almost 4 months ago.
Re: Cover for oversized in-ground spa
There is NO automatic upgrade to "Registered", or rather "Registered+".
You can post already -- with a delay -- if you are "Restricted" but it's very hard to spam. I tried to manually upgrade folks, but it takes too long to check out all the info.
And I tried auto-upgrading (after X number of posts) but I've got a bunch of spammers lurking in the "Restricted" group. While they are "Restricted", they can't do anything very useful to them, but I know they are there because occasionally one will go ahead and try, get caught during moderation, and end up banned forever.
What I have done is create the "CheckMeOut" subscription for $4, which allows you to permanently get "Registered+" status . . . . if (BIG if!) you update your profile to include valid personal info that spammers are afraid to give. But, here's the "BUT": But, if you give me bogus info, you LOSE the $4 and stay restricted.
The cost eliminates most spammers, but surprisingly, I've already had a guy pay the $4, post bogus info, and then complain when I didn't upgrade them. When I checked the second time, (after the complaint), I found info showing that he had spammed other forums. So, I banned him altogether. And, I got $4 for banning him. Made me happier, if not much richer.
Anyhow, now there are 2 routes to a Registered+ status. Buy a regular subscription (for 1 - 5 years), and when it expires, you drop back to "Registered+" instead of "Restricted" status. OR, give me $4 to "Check(You)Out", add verifiable --and valid -- personal info to your private profile, and I'll promote you.
This info is NOT visible to anyone but me and the moderators (Aylad, CarlD, Poconos, & Watermom), and I have never sold any data from here (or given it away, either).
But, if you try the CheckMeOut subscription, do NOT use bogus data. You'll just lose the $4 and have to start again!

Hey John, I don't know the 'nuts and bolts' of "how to be an accepable poster", but you can send the pics to " poolforum AT gmail DOT com." and Ben will be able to post them here.
Re: Cover for oversized in-ground spa
Ted's right - sorry I forgot to mention it.
Obviously, I can grab it from the link, but if you send it by email, I clearly have the right to repost it. I don't like using links to people's own sites, because the sites go down, or they remove the photo, and then it kills the thread. I've got 100's of threads killed that way. And, when I post it, the photo goes through a virus scanner first.
And, I don't trust vBulletin's photo storage system. They change it every time they do a major software upgrade, and for whatever reason, the photos get killed when I upgrade.
So . . . startling last year, I've been posting them in the PoolForum Picasa album. I figure those will be up till Google fails, and if Google fails, the Net as we know it is gone anyhow!
Re: Cover for oversized in-ground spa
Hi. I joined the forum over 3 months ago and also paid the $4 via PayPal on Jan 13 in order to have posting privilege. Why am I still restricted? Surely it is obvious by now that I am who to I claim to be.
Re: Cover for oversized in-ground spa
Hi John;
I've emailed you instructions again a few minutes ago. I guess you didn't get them when I sent them several days ago?
In any case, though you joined the forum several months ago, you only paid for the CheckMeOut function a week ago. And, I couldn't do that very easily until you entered the info in your profile. (I've reproduced the instructions, below.) It turns out I was able to find what I think is your home and work address, but it required a bit of Linux-y nerdy stuff to do so. If you can confirm my guesses, I'll go ahead and upgrade your membership.
Meanwhile, here's your spa photo:
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-z...AM_0213-ed.jpg
and a link to a slightly larger version.
CheckMeOut Instructions
1. Login as "John A Smith" -- remember that spaces are part of your user ID.
2. Go to http://www.poolforum.com/pf2/profile.php?do=editoptions
This info you put there is visible ONLY to you and the moderators. (Actually, it may not be visible to them, just to me.)
3. Scroll to the bottom of the page, and enter your address and phone number.
4. Email me when you've done so, and I'll check it out, and enable your "Registered+" status.
5. Send me the link on your thread, and I'll put the picture you sent in it.
Re: Cover for oversized in-ground spa
Just looked at your original post, and the picture.
Either LoopLoc (www.looploc.com) or Meyco (www.meycoproducts.com/PoolCovers.htm) can make a custom cover for that spa. In full sun, in CA, I'm guessing it will last 7 - 9 years. If you get the all-black cover it may last longer. In this area, they've lasted 10 - 13 years, but we don't have the sun you do.
I'd avoid the other cover makers. Their quality has not been as good, in my experience.
Re: Cover for oversized in-ground spa
John, are you still thinking about doing this?
I am more than willing to give you the tips on measuring and installing a safety cover.
