Chlorine eating pool
I started the pool off right. Drained, cleaned and refilled. 4x24 aboveground pool, approximate 13,000 gallons. When finished I put 3 gallons of bleach an rwataryed the pump. It blew within minutes. By the time I got the pump checked out, ordered anninstalled a new pp
My water was lime green. Got pump going an put in 3.5 gLlons of bleach, adjusted ph fro
8.2 to 7.6 and added Algecide(my mistake) an 3 Inch tabs. Ran pump all night, water was grey an hazy, chlorine was still around 5. By noon FC was 0. Pool is clearing up. What next?

Re: Chlorine eating pool
Sounds like you are going OK; just takes time.
As far as your pool eating chlorine, you can add a 3 gallon (~15 ppm dose on your pool) in the late PM. Test in the early AM (within 2 hours of sunrise) and again that afternoon. If it's still real high in the AM, your water does not have a high chlorine demand. If it disappears during the day (sunny day!) you need stabilizer.
It's easier to run pools well with a good testkit and it's REALLY important to be able to test high chlorine. So, if it fits your budget, check out the Amazon links for the Taylor K2006 or 2006C kits. (You can NOT substitute a K2005 or any form of strips or electronics.)

Re: Chlorine eating pool
Keep hitting it with bleach. Any idea what your CYA level is? We need that to be able to advise you how high to take your chlorine. Run your pump 24/7 while you are working to clear it. Backwash pump as needed.
If you don't have a good kt, get one. We recommend the Taylor K-2006 or 2006C which is the same kit with larger quantities of some of the reagents. You can get it through the Amazon link in my signature. Make sure the seller is Amato Industries; some other sellers are substituting the K-2005 instead and you don't want that one.
I'd like to welcome you to the Pool Forum!

Re: Chlorine eating pool
Thanks for the help! Wish I had found you guys years ago. Ben, I think that stabilizer is the problem. Watermom, I have not checked CYA. I will need to get a better kit. I just put 3 gallons in and will check shortly and in the AM. Have a wonderful evening!

Re: Chlorine eating pool
Tish morning my FC was very high and at noon down to .5. So I am sure I need to add cya to stabilize. The pool was drained and refilled so the only cya present is from 3 3" tabs that are dissolving. It is approxiamtly 13,000 gallons. What is the best way to raise my cya level.

Re: Chlorine eating pool
You can raise it by just using pucks , but it takes awhile. You can also add it seperately-- it's sold at WalMart, Home Depot, etc as "conditioner" or "balancer", but if the ingredient label says cyuaniric or isocyanuric acid, that's the stuff. You can add it via skimmer (don't test or backwash for 4-5 days if you do it this way because it takes awhile to dissolve) or pit it in a sock and hang it in front of a return. If you want to keep using pucks, shoot for about 20 ppm CYA if you add it seperately. If you're done with pucks, shoot for around 40.

Re: Chlorine eating pool
I keep my CYA at 80-90 ppm at all times, but I'm an exception to the norm around here. My pool is in full sun from 8am to around 7pm, and as you know it's a killer out there right now. I find that when my CYA is any lower, then I have trouble keeping adequate chlorine in the pool, even with daily additions. With it at 80-90, then I add every other day, or sometimes every 3rd. I do shock more often than others, though--I shock it after a week or so of heavy bather load and after any hurricane-driven storm. Glad to see another Louisianian around here!!
edit: BTW, I'm up very near Shreveport
