Pentair pump Problem

I have a 1 1/2 HP pentair pump that was working fine yesterday then today timer clicks and the pump motor is making a loud humming noise for about 30 seconds then it turns off. After a couple minutes it does it all over again. I took the motor off the pump assembly to check the impeller, but it spins freely. However, the motor casing was extremely hot. I tried to see if a 2X4 would help out the starter but it didn't do anything. Please help. thank you in advance.

I can't help with your problem, but just wanted to let you know that your post had been read and to say welcome to you. Somebody else who knows more about pumps and motor issues than I do should be along shortly to help.

If it spins freely . . . it's probably not bearings.

Could be capacitor or start/run winding switch. Repairs are electrical in nature -- are you up for that? Do you have voltmeter?
