Mr.RG - High chlorine level after shock, how long until it comes down to a safe lvl?

Just educated myself on the BBB method and wish I had done so sooner..... it is what it is.

I had the green monster and was able to get it back to blue but had to go pretty high with the FC to get it to turn. I ended up at ~30ppm FC (CYA is 90) and I was able to hold it there for 24 hours. The pool looks great, everything has been scrubbed and the filters cleaned - not a hint of green to be found. I started the process with a PH of 7.2 knowing that it would fluctuate (and rise a bit) over the next few days - I will keep checking to make sure it stays in range. The TA has been all over the place as well. I ran the waterfall for a bit today and will tomorrow to bring it down (PH still ~7.2)

Anyway - I know it isn't an exact science but how long will it take for the chlorine to get down to <10ppm? I will hold it at 3 (SWG pool) once it gets down but was just wondering what to expect. The days are sunny with highs in the high 80s and no rain in the forcast.--> 23,250 Gallon IG Salt - Plaster - Waterway 60 Sq.Ft. Hi Ron;

You need to take a look at my Best Guess Chart, linked below. That chart is no longer just a guess, but is based (now) on both on a strong practical experience, from 1,000's of users both here and at Trouble Free Pool (they adopted it as well), and on the chemical analysis of "Chem_Geek".

My point: 3 ppm is too low for a SCWG at 90+ ppm CYA.

Also, you don't have to wait to swim. At 90 ppm CYA, 25 ppm is too high for brand new women's fashion swimwear, but it is NOT too high for people. So,
if your wife or daughters have new swimsuits, tell them to set those aside, and wear last years till levels drop, but otherwise, everyone should be fine.

Keep in mind, that for YEARS the EPA had no upper limit of any kind on chlorine in drinking water, even though they had an upper limit (3 ppm) on pool chemical labels. It actually happened that pools were filled with drinking water that was too 'high' in chlorine to swim in!

Now, the drinking water standards have an upper 'action' limit of 4 ppm, which means that if your local water company accidentally over-chlorinates to 10ppm (with NO stabilizer) they have to take "action" to correct the overfeed . . . but that's all. They don't have to tell anyone, or warn customers or any thing.

Hope this clears things up -- looks like you've already cleared things up in your pool!

Thanks Doc, I used the best guess chart and we went for a swim today. I told the kids that I needed to scrub and vac one more time (Just for GP) and they stood around in their goggles and swim trunks and watched... lol.

I was wondering how long it would take (ballpark - I know it isn't an exact science) for the chlorine level to drift back down to <10... I am using the dilution method and it is still out of range on a 1:1 but shows up on the 2:1 test. I have spent a ton of money on the pool (new grids, new vac hose, new this, new that etc...) so a better test kit may be a week or so away.

In my pool in Louisiana, it would take (ballpark) 3-4 days with a CYA of 90 for chlorine to drop below 10....

I had guessed about four or five but have zero background to guess so it was really just a "SWAG"... I will keep track in my pool log and see how it reacts and how long it takes.
