wrong filter size on pool

Hello,

Luke the pool professional here in need of more professional help. I have a client with a pool that the filteration system is undersized. I need to find a fix for my client that is workable. Here's what they got.

72,000 gallons, newly painted against my wishes
3.5" shallow
12' deep end
2 HP challenger
TR-140 sand filter

All 2" plumbing
skimmers on separate lines/drain line in the middle 3" line into pump

(1) 2" line to (5) returns at surface level

duel main drains
two skimmers
one cleaner line

Pool filter gets clogged too quickly, have to backwash every visit. Less than one swimmer a week. Sometimes they'll have a party, but that's a rarity. The book calls for a 4" line which I can't provide and two TR-100s. I don't see that happening with the pool already built. Maybe a DE filter or a bunch or cartridge filters in line. Your suggestions?

Put on a second TR-140 plumbed in parallel and then downsize the pump. A 2hp Challenger on 2" plumbing is a bad combination.

What is getting into the pool to clog the filter so quickly?

What did you ever do about that brken off pipe?

I think poolman or me misinterpreted you setup...sound to me like you've got 3" pipe into the pump from 3 - 2" lines.

I, too, would think the best fix would be to tee the pressure line out of the pump into two parallel filters. Two TR-140's would be plenty of capacity.

After all that, I don't understand what's pugging the filter so quickly, either. Can/will the customer learn to backwash?
