View Full Version : Plugging main pool drain.

I have an inground 18x16 ft pool that developed a leak in the line from the main drain. This weekend I plugged the bottom drain and determined that is where the leak is coming from.

I was hoping instead of digging up the pipes that I could possibly just leave the bottom drain plugged and just use the skimmer intake.

What is happening now is that the pump doesn't seem to get be getting enough water and there are bubbles coming out of the return jet. I've noticed this in the past when i've closed one of the valves.

What are my option? Smaller pump? Small return valves? Break down and fix the main line?

Thanks,

Greg

Welcome to the forum!

How high is the water in the pool? The extra suction through the skimmer by having the MD plugged may be causing a vortex.

Alternately, the extra suction may be enough to draw air through a questionable seal or connection on the suction side (even the valve itself). To check this, dribble water on any suspect area with the pump running and see if the bubbles in the pump housing lessen.

Sorry I can't go into greater detail now, but this is a very busy time of year for pool dudes. I'll follow this post if you need more info. Also, I know searching could dig up some of my previous pearls of wisdom on this issue and there are a bunch of great folks here that will also assist you.
