Green Water

I have a salt water pool and i am going try my hand at treating my pool for the first time this year. I was refered to this site by a friend who has used this site for a while and his pool looks great. The local pool company sold me shock but it only slightly cleared the water and now my pool has returned to its beautiful green color again. Please help and Thank you in advance.

We will need you to post current water testing results in order to be able to help you. Please test with a drops-based test kit (not test strips) and repost and somebody here will try to help you. Welcome to the forum. You've got a really smart friend if he sends you here!

please....in the course of clearing up the algae, avoid any specialty algaecides with YELLOW or MUSTARD in the name, or United Chemicals with TREAT in the name, as these contain Sodium Bromide. This will cause problems with salt chlorine generator systems.

BTW -- asdavis --- I'm gonna move your post to the salt-water section of the forum. Pools with SWC have special considerations to be taken into account, so it is best for posts about these pools to be in that section where our people who are knowledgeable about SWCs are more likely to see them.

I have to make one addendum to Sean's post.

I have a quart container in front of me of Blue Shield "Mustard Algae Eliminator" made for NAMCO that contains pure Polyquat 60%

It's active ingredient is....: Poly (OXYETHYLENE(DIMETHYLIMINO)ETHYLENE(DIMETHYLIMINO) ETHLYENE DICHLORIDE)....60%

Inert ingredients: 40%.

That's why we say if it says "Poly...<something,something> ...60%" it's PolyQuat.

The moral is: No matter WHAT an algaecide is called, read the ingredients. If you don't see "Poly...<something>...60%" as the only active ingredient, DO NOT BUY IT!
