The sticker is gone from the top of my Hayward S244T sand filter and I don't remember where the "waste" position is.
I do know that:
Normal is at 12 o'clock
Backwash is at 6 o'clock
Rinse is at 11 o'clock
Waste position is

Just ran out to confirm: on my Hayward Sand filter, waste is 1 oclock. All my other settings match yours exactly.

1:00 it is! I have a Hayward as well. You may want to label it, or engrave it into the plastic --a single letter should do. N, W, B, R, C for normal, waste, backwash, rinse, closed.

Carl & Bass,

Do either of your filters have the WINTER position between waste and backwash? Mine has 7 settings as follows:
Filter/Normal (12 o'clock)
Waste
Winter
Closed
Backwash (6 o'clock)
Recirculate
Rinse

Just wanted to clarify.

I have a 244T also...no Winter setting. Think I heard that it's just an intermediate position that keeps the handle lifted so all ports are open and no pressure is on the valve gasket. Same as leaving the handle between operational settings. Best guess.
