Does anyone know of a good source for cheap bleach. The price seems to be going up all the time. The cheapest I can find is about $1.30 for a 96 oz. bottle of 5.25% at the local Dollar store. TIA

The local hardware store here (Marcellus NY) sells the pool stuff at $10 for a 5 gallon jug of 12% concentration. That seems to be a better deal. Check around your local area.

That's a pretty good price! Usually, in the spring, I can find 5 gallon jugs of 26% for $15--but you need to use it fast before it breaks down!

When Brookshire's or CVS runs it on sale here (Louisiana) you can get a gallon of 6% for $1, but other wise the cheapest seems to be WalMart. My friends at Dollar General decided to change theirs to a 3 qt jug and charge $1.30 for it....no thanks!

Hey Janet. I haven't had any luck at the Dollar General stores either. Now Wal-Mart started charging over $2.00 (I think $2.24) for the 174oz jug down here. I will watch the ads for the CVS sale.

Take care.

Since last summer, I've been geting it at Aldi's for $1 per 3 quart bottle of 6%. Thats the cheapest I've found. Not sure how regional the store is but I think they are expanding around the country.

I think the $1 stores carry bleach - don't know if their 1 gallon or not.

The dollar stores Like Family Dollar & Dollar General carry 3/4 gallon jugs and they typically sell for $1.13 and up. The best deal I've found is at DollarTree which charges $1 for their 3/4 gallon jugs. Here in Dallas, WalMart's 2 gallon jugs sell for $2.28 and Sam's Club has a 3 pk of Chlorox in 182 fl ounce jugs for $7.82.

We have an Aldi's being built as we speak here in North Bama. I have family in Philly and they shop there often. I am excited to be getting a new chain here, sure beats the same ole places

Be aware that some stores sell bleach that is 5.25% sodium hypochlorite and some sell 6%. Most places sell 6% but you can sometimes still find the other. Take this into consideration when doing price comparisons. Check the label to see what you are getting.

WaterMom makes a good point. The bleach sold by WalMart & the Chlorox at Sam's Club is 6% as is the bleach sold by DollarTree. The bleach sold by Dollar General & Family Dollar is 5.25%. I have to say that I was skeptical at first that using bleach would actually work but after giving it a try I am completely sold. It completely killed off the algae and turned my pool water sparkling clear and blue.

Laundry bleach is merely one way of packaging Sodium Hypochlorite solution. A local pool store sells 6% (ultra bleach) in gallon jugs labled "Liquid Chlorine". They sell 12% gallon jugs of the stuff labled "Liquid Shock".

Re-labeling stuff to make it look like more than it is is nothing really new--think about people spending 2-3$ for a bottle of water, just because it says "Evian"--talk about a license to print money!!!!

The Moral: Judge by the ingredients and the amount, not by the fancy hyping label. I don't care if it says "Mustard Algaecide", "Black Algaecide" or "Algaecide"--if the ingredients are "60 % Poly...<something unpronounceable>...." then it's PolyQuat and I will buy it--if it's no more than $15/quart. If it contains anything else, it stays on the shelf.

Check the hypochlorite percentage on that--the last time I looked at the Dollar Tree down here, it was only 3%.....

Doesn't "ultra" generally signify that it's 6% (or at least 5.25%)?

I checked a dollar tree around here last year and I couldn't find the % listed anywhere on the jug. I don't recall whether it said "ultra".

Standard Chlorox bleach was always 5.25%, about 2 years ago they came out with Ultra as a way to rip off the consumer. You see the difference between regular and ultra is that ultra is 6% but it comes in a smaller bottle. The ultra bleach is not sold in a gallon bottle but in one that smaller, forget exact size. The two generally sell for the same price, but if you calculate how much of the active you are actually getting the 5.25% bottle is normally cheaper.

the local home depot has 10% bleach for $1.99/gallon and 5.25% bleach for $1.30/gallon and my local pinch a penny/leslies pool supply sells 10.5% 2.5gallon yellow jugs for $4 a jug which equals $1.60/gallons for 10% seems to be the best deal around, i will definitely now go look @ wal mart and the local dollar stores to try to find a cheaper way to go but for now im stuck @ the local pool stores which i hate!! owell

Massachusetts and Rhode Island store 1 gallon, 12%, on sale frequently for $1.88.....nicely packaged in boxes of 4 gallons

The smaller jugs are usually 3 quarts. (0.75 gallons) Remember, you don't need to buy Clorox. Buy the generic stuff. Same stuff, cheaper. No fragrances, fancy flavors, etc. And, as this thread states, check to see what strength you are buying. If it is only 3% (I have also seen it that low) for about the same price, that is no bargain.

My Walmart sells the 96 oz 6% bleach for $1.17, that comes out to an equivalent price of $2.60 per gallon of 10%. Plus the higher concentration stuff tends to degrade faster.

Buy it quickly....our WalMart has gone up to $1.52 for the 96 oz jug--and there were none of the bigger jugs to be found. Looks like people are finally taking my advice!

don't buy bleach unless the concentration is listed. one of the dollar type stores in my area is selling gallons for $1, which looked great - until i found out that they're THREE percent. ugh.

every spring i do the rounds and find all the best prices i can, and this year the winner is meijer. not sure why they're selling it at this price, but they have 10% liquid at ten bucks a case (4 gallons). most other places charge between 12 and 15 for the same product.

on a per-ounce of actual chlorine, that's the best i could find.

Still, here, the best price as at one of the pool stores. They are selling the carboys of 12% for $16, which is equiv to $1.60/gal of Ultra (6%). When I've tested it from this store, it's usually around 14% so it's actually a little cheaper than $1.60 for 6%. They do a HUGE turnover on carboys so it's always pretty fresh.

$1.17 for the 96 oz jug of 6% from Walmart is still the cheapest, by a few cents.

Tonight I went around looking for some cheap bleach since my stockpile went dry.

Found 5.25% @ generic A&F brand HomeDepot for $1.79 / Gallon
6% Bleach brand at HomeDepot for $4.99 / 1.5 Gallon
10% generic brand at HomeDepot for $3.29 / Gallon

6% Bleach brand at Kmart for $3.99 / 1.5 Gallon
?% Generic brand at Kmart for $1.29 / .75 Gallon - Label has no data so ill pass

6% Bleach brand at BJ's for $8.99/ 4.5 Gallon

10% yellow jug at Leslies pool supply for $4.75 / 2.5 Gallon
Currently running a special buy 2 get 1 free and I have found that they regularly run this special in my area. The drawback as we all know to this option is dealing with their annoying sales team but otherwise it seems to be the best deal on bleach in my area (Miami) Even without the special it seems to me thats the best deal.

Any tips to finding better deals on bleach - I would be much happier avoiding pool stores as much as humanly possible. :D
