Have a Jacuzzi pool sand filter MFM17.
The owner manual saids it takes 150 lbs. of sand. But this seems to be wrong I think.
There is a grated basket in the filter about 10” below the top called a deflector basket. If I put 150 lbs of sand in it will cover this basket.
I thought the sand should be about 1” below.
Is it better to much or to little sand
Any suggestions
thanks

Call the company and ask--that's easiest. Are you sure that basket is supposed to stay in? On my filter, it's a shipping and winterization tool that stabilizes the vertical pipe. Ask for technical support and have the model and serial number of the filter ready. I did that with Hayward since my filter and pump aren't a matched pair and they were able to reassure me they work fine together--6 years later they are still fine.

I am sure from the owners manual the basket stays in.

Tech support is not good since they sold company. When I did talk to them but they did not seem to know much.
Just repeated the manual says 150 lbs but they also added that the sand level should be about 2” below this basket.
That would be only 100 lbs of sand. Seems like a big difference for me to get wrong and hurt cleaning power of filter.
Hard to belive the manual is wrong but with 150lbs the sand level would be about 8” from the top

Looking at the picture I see 2 items: #7 and #14.
#14 looks like the transporting/winter storage device on my Hayward (different shape). However, your attachment only described up to #13, so I'm guessing.
#7 clearly looks like it's supposed to be right up to the bottom of the multi-valve, protecting it, and it doesn't look like it should even go 8" into the filter, so I'm wondering if it's not assembled correctly?????
Maybe one of the pool pros who deal with equipment can answer it better than I can. I don't think the sand should be over it--the top of the sand is supposed to be smooth.
I'm guessing all the way here....
