Pentair pump won't start-up

I have a pentair dual speed whisperflo 1 hp pump that is on the fritz in a very weird way.

- If it starts up in high speed, the motor just buzzes and doesn't turn over.

- If I start it up in low speed, it runs fine.

- If I start it up in low speed, then switch it to high speed, it also seems to run though the pressure gauge on my filter is about 5 or 10 psi less than it has been in the past.

Can anyone guess what is going on? Can the motor be replaced separate from the pump?

Looking in this forum at the titles there are several threads relating to your problem, or at least something close. Also try using the advanced search function and searching for 'switch' and then maybe 'starting'. Here are a couple recent threads that may help:

I know what the starting circuit looks like on a single speed but never dealt with a two speed but sure sounds like a switch issue. See if these threads help and if not we'll pursue further. My belief is that if you can get it to run without smoking then it is probably something simple.
